The Carthage College women's tennis team (11-0, 7-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) opened spring-season play with a 5-4 victory over Wisconsin-La Crosse (10-3) on Sunday, March 8, at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis.
 
Haleigh McPeek (Sr., Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest, 13-4) fell to the Eagle's Bridget Bellissimo at No. 1 singles, the latter winning 1-6, 6-0, 10-5. Max Mella (Fr., Warren, Ill./Warren Township, 11-5) was defeated at No. 2 singles, however, Abbi Howell (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest, 15-6) was a winner at No. 3 singles, winning 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, over La Crosse. Taylor Bolyard (Fr., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper, 14-3) fell at No. 4 singles, as did Kristen Kalinka (So., Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph, 3-3) at No. 5 singles. Kirsten Peterson (Jr., Hastings, Minn./Hastings, 15-4) was a winner at No. 6 singles with a match score of 7-6(4), 6-1.
 
The No. 1 doubles duo of McPeek and Mella (18-3) defeated the Eagles' pair of Bellissimo and Kimmy Mrozek, 9-7. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Bolyard and Kalinka (17-3) also won their match, as did the No. 3 doubles duo of Howell and Peterson (1-0).
 
The Lady Reds will continue to chase perfection as they take on Wisconsin-Oshkosh (5-7) on Saturday, March 14, at 2:30 p.m., at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center in Oshkosh, Wis.
