Women's Lacrosse Defeats Augsburg, 20-6, on Feb. 21

Lady Reds Opens the Season with a 2-0 Trip to Minnesota

The Carthage College women's lacrosse team (2-0, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) completed a two-game trip to Minnesota on Sunday, Feb. 22 with a 20-6 win over Augsburg College (1-2) at the dome-covered Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis, Minn.  Carthage opened its 2015 on Saturday night, Feb. 21 with a 24-3 win over Loras College (0-1).
 
In the win over Augsburg, Carthage led, 9-4, at halftime, and the Lady Reds outscored the Auggies, 11-2, in the second period.  Madison Griffin (So., Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) led the Lady Reds with five goals, one assist, two ground balls and four caused turnovers.  Rachel Mussell (Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Convent of the Visitation) scored four goals with six ground balls and four caused turnovers. 

Hannah Bellenbaum (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) had four goals with one assist, two ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Elizabeth Wittenborg (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) had four goals, one ground ball and one assist.  Goalkeeper Taylor Sopron (Jr., La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) played the first 51 minutes and collected 11 saves.  Ashley Pettipiece and Dezera Sieracki scored two goals each for Augsburg.
 
Carthage travels to Sewanee, Tenn., on Saturday-Sunday, March 7-8 to play two games at the University of the South's Puett Field.  The Lady Reds take on the College of Wooster on Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m., followed by a Sunday, March 8 game versus the University of the South, beginning at Noon.
