KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Lady Reds soccer team dropped a hard fought match Tuesday at Art Keller Field to #16 in the country, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 5-2.
Â
The loss drops the Lady Reds to 3-8 on the season, while Whitewater imporved to 10-2 in 2015.
Â
Carthage and Whitewater opened with back-and-forth chances through the first 35 minutes. Carthage's
Maggie Washelesky nearly opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Washelesky beat the Whitewater keeper to a ball but pushed it just wide of the net.
Â
Only a minute later the Warhawks got on the scoreboard as a cross from the left found Karina Rosales at the penalty spot, who was able to beat
Kate Perry to her left for the first goal of the game.
Â
The Lady Reds had a second excellent opportunity as off a corner kick
Kayla McGuinness rose above the Whitewater defense to win a header. Unfortunately she pushed it wide of the net to keep the score at 1-0 heading into the half.
Â
The Warhawks extended their lead five minutes into the second half as a Carthage foul in the box awarded Whitewater a penalty kick. On the ensuing penalty kick, Brianna Reid slotted the shot past the diving Perry for a 2-0 lead.
Â
McGuinness and
Rachel Post looked to cut into the two-goal deficit with quality opportunities that missed just wide and narrowly over the crossbar respectively.
Â
The Warhawks would add to their lead in the 57th and 66th minutes as Reid and Rosales would each get second goals of the match.
Â
Washelesky got one back for the Lady Reds as she controlled her own rebound off a blocked shot and netted it past the Whitewater goalkeeper in the 68th minute.
Â
After a fifth Whitewater goal, giving Rosales a hat-tick, Washelesky would get her second goal of the match as she headed in a cross of a corner by
Talia Jaramillo in the 84th minute.
Â
The two-goal game gives Washelesky nine in 2015 and is her third two-goal game of her freshman campaign.
Â
The Lady Reds will now enter a five-game stretch of CCIW matches beginning with Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, Saturday at 3:00 PM.
