Lady Reds' 2-1 Win Sends Carthage To CCIW Tournament

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Lady Reds have advanced to the 2015 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament following an overtime win at Art Keller Field Saturday over Elmhurst, 2-1.

Saturday marked senior night so prior to the match defender Rachel Post, goalkeeper Abby Alm, defender Kara Aittama and team manager Carla Nuzzo were honored for their time with the Lady Reds.

With the win the Lady Reds clinch the fourth and final tournament spot and finish the regular season at 6-11-1 and 3-3-1 in the CCIW.

Down 1-0 late in the match, Carthage senior Rachel Post took a cross from defender Kayla McGuinness and put it off the crossbar and into the net to tie it at 1-1 in the 88th minute.

The goal ignited the Lady Reds and with 20-seconds remaining in regulation a cross found Erin Ganzke at the top of the six-yard box but her shot was blocked from point blank to preserve the 1-1 game and Elmhurst escaped to go into overtime.

In overtime Lauren Szumski played a cross to the back post in the 96th minute where Amy Kappelman had her first shot saved but volleyed her rebound past the near post for the golden goal winner.

For Kappelman it was her first goal of the season and it sent the Lady Reds into the CCIW tournament for the first time since 2013.

The #4 Lady Reds will face the #1 seeded Illinois Wesleyan University Titans Wednesday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m. at Illinois Wesleyan
