BLOOMINGTON, Ill – The number-four seeded Carthage College women's soccer team saw their season come to an end Wednesday as the Lady Reds fell to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin's top team, Illinois Wesleyan University, in the CCIW Tournament semifinals with a 6-2 loss.
Â
The number-nine team in the country, Illinois Wesleyan, controlled much of the pace of play and outshot Carthage 22-7 in the match. Carthage did earn a 5-3 advantage on corners but the Titans offense was too much, as the Lady Reds allowed a season-high six goals.
Â
The Lady Reds fell behind early as a combination at the top of the box created an opening for Sydney Fox who buried a shot to the left of Carthage goalkeeper
Abby Alm.Â
Â
Following a missed penalty kick that nearly made it 2-0 in favor of Illinois Wesleyan, the Carthage defense of
Kara Aittama,
Kayla McGuinness,
Rachel Post and
Darcy Stoecklin continuously turned away the attack of the number-nine team in the country.
Â
However the offensive attack by the Titans would eventually capitalize late in the half, scoring three goals in the final 12 minutes of the first half to give IWU a commanding 4-0 lead after 45 minutes.
Â
Maggie Washelesky put Carthage on the board in the 61st minute, scoring her team-high tenth goal of the season to cut the Lady Reds deficit to 4-1.
Â
Following Illinois Wesleyan goals in the 62nd and 85th minutes,
Rachel Post finished her fifth goal of the season to closeout the scoring at 6-2.
Â
The loss ends the season for the Lady Reds season with a final record of 6-12-1 in 2015. The defeat also concludes the great careers of
Rachel Post,
Kara Aittama and goalkeeper
Abby Alm as Lady Reds.
