No. 8 Women's Volleyball goes 2-0 at the "2015 UW-Platteville Triangular"

Lady Reds return home on Tuesday, Oct. 6th at 7 p.m. to take on North Central (Ill.)

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Carthage College women's volleyball team (15-3, 0-1 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin), ranked eighth in the Sept. 29 ACVA poll, traveled to Platteville, Wis. on Saturday, Oct. 3 to take on Kalamazoo College (1-16) and UW-Platteville (10-10) in the "2015 UW-Platteville Triangular" at the Williams Fieldhouse.
 
The Lady Reds took on Kalamazoo College in a noon match to kick off the triangular, and jumped out to a 4-0 lead shortly into the first set. Kalamazoo would try to come, back but the closest they would get to the Lady Reds in the first set was a score of 7-3. Carthage then went on a five-point lead to make the score 12-3 and would keep the lead the remainder of the set, winning 25-13 over the hornets.
 
Kalamazoo would come back stronger in the second set and give the Lady Reds a run for their money. Carthage would score the first point of the set on a kill by Stefanie Romanowski before Kalamazoo would take the lead 2-1. Carthage would tie it up at 2-2 and again at 3-3 before going on a run to make the score 6-3. Kalamazoo would go on a four-point run later in the match to tie the score up at 10-10 and again at 11-11. The Lady Reds then had the opportunity to go on a five-point run to make the score 16-11 and maintain their lead for the remainder of the set, going on to win 25-22.
 
The Hornets would sting first in the third set off of a bad set by Romanowski. The Lady Reds would then tie the score at 1-1 off of an attack error by Kalamazoo's Noa Taakoby. Kalamazoo would go on to take the lead 4-1, and would keep the lead until the score was 11-10 in favor of the Hornets. The Lady Reds were not going to lose the set and the chance to take the match in three sets. Starting off with an attack error by Kalamazoo, Carthage went on a 12-point run to make the score 22-11. The Lady Reds would go on to win the set 25-14, and sweep the Hornets 3-0.
 
As a team, Carthage recorded 41 kills, six aces, eight blocks, 37 assists, 49 digs and hit .318 in the three set match. Stephanie Korbakes and Emily Heuermann both made nine kills along with Heuermann's three aces, Romanowski's five blocks and Karen Chin's 31 assists. Heuermann executed 13 digs, complimented by Luci Krenzke and Mallory Parsons who each made 10 digs, respectively.
 
Carthage faced a tougher opponent in the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in a match at 2 p.m. Carthage took the lead 3-0 in the first set and the Lady Reds would keep the lead until the Pioneers tied the game up at 10-10. Shortly after, the Lady Reds would go on a five-point run to make the score 17-11, and would go on to win the game 25-17.
 
UW-Platteville would prove to be more competitive in the second set. Both teams would go back and forth for the first few points with the score being tied at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, and 6-6. The Lady Reds would make a three point run to make the score 9-6 before the Pioneers would come back to tie the game at 11-11. Both teams would continue to battle from there until Platteville took a large lead and won the second set 25-20, making the match score 1-1.
 
Carthage would come back with a chip off their shoulder and make a six-point run towards the end of the third set to win the set 25-16, taking the lead 2-1.
 
It seemed as if the Pioneers had given up in the fourth set when the Lady Reds took a 12-3 lead to start the set. After a timeout UW-Platteville quickly regained their composure and went on a five-point run to make the score 12-8 in favor of the Lady Reds. The score would stay very close between the two teams until the Pioneers had the chance to tie the game at 20-20. Carthage scored on a kill by Megan Fallert to make the score 21-20. UW-Platteville then went on a four-point lead to make the score 24-21. The Lady Reds went on to score three points off of a kill by Heuermann, and attack error by UW-Platteville and an ace by Bria Hailey to tie the game at 24-24. The Pioneers then went on to score two points thanks to a kill by Rachel Ambroch and an attack error by the Lady Reds. UW-Platteville would win the fourth set 26-24 and tie the match at 2-2.
 
In the fifth and final set, the Pioneers would score first to make the score 2-0. The Lady Reds were able to keep the score close, but were unable to tie the game until the score was 14-14. Carthage would then score two points on kills by Heuermann to win the set 16-14 and secure the 3-2 win over the Pioneers.
 
Carthage recorded 63 kills, seven aces, six blocks, 57 assists, 80 digs and hit .253 in the five-set match against the UW-Platteville Pioneers. Heuermann made 16 kills in the match, along with Korbakes' 12 and Jaime Dickinson's 11. Fallert completed four blocks, along with Chin's 50 assists and Krenzke's 25 digs.
 
The Lady Reds will return home on Tuesday, Oct. 6th at 7 p.m. to take on North Central (Ill.) at Tarble Arena.
