Women's Soccer Sinks Vikings Wednesday, 3-0

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Lady Reds soccer team earned their first win in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Wednesday as they defeated the Vikings of North Park University, 3-0, at Art Keller Field.

The win pushes the Lady Reds to 4-10-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference.

Carthage controlled the pace of play for most of the game and earned a season-high 27 shots to NPU's three.

Carthage had a number of great opportunities to open the scoring in the first half off set pieces but the finishing touches weren't meant to be as the Lady Reds were unable to find the back of the net.

Then in the 36th minute, Danielle Noverini played a ball from 25-yards out behind the Viking's backline where Joanne Stanfa ran on to the pass and sent a shot back across the goal and into the left side netting.  For Stanfa it was her first goal of the season to put the Lady Reds up 1-0.

The Lady Reds would then tack-on two more goals in the second half starting when Erin Ganzke collected a loose ball in the midfield and played it through the North Park defense to Corinne Brennan who place the ball to the far post past the charging NPU goalkeeper.

Lauren Szumski would close-out the scoring for the Lady Reds following a short Vikings' goal kick which was settled by Brennan, played out to the left to Szumski, and Szumski hit a fantastic shot just over the outstretched goalkeeper and off the back post before hitting the net.

"It was nice tonight to see three different players capitalize on their chances," said head coach Sara Meyer.

Senior goalkeeper Abby Alm turned in a shutout for the second-straight game saving the only two Viking shots on target.

"The ladies are playing well and it shows in how we are possessing the ball and attacking as a team," said Meyer, "It's been great to see that everything we have been working on in practice is continuing to show on the field through our possession and winning of every 50/50 ball."

Carthage hits the road for their next match as the Lady Reds travel to Millikin University Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. match.
