ResultsThe Carthage College men's track and field team (6-1 outdoor record), ranked 15th in March 31 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III outdoor poll, opened its outdoor season on Saturday, April 5 by finishing second at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Invitational at McCully Stadium in Wheaton, Ill.
North Central College won the 10-team event with 239.50 points, followed by Carthage second at 185, Wisconsin-Parkside third at 92, Aurora University fourth at 81.50, Wheaton College (Ill.) fifth at 80, Benedictine University (Ill.) sixth at 41, Harper College and the College of DuPage tied for seventh place at 20 points each, Washington University (Mo.) ninth at 11 and Wisconsin-Stout 10th with five points.
Carthage's
Darin Ward (Fr., Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs) won the long jump (21-2 ¾) and took second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.10).
David Goodalis (So., Naperville, Ill./Central) took first place in the hammer throw (152-8) and second in the shot put (49-5 ¾).
Trevor James (Sr., Maywood, Ill./Chicago-Hope Academy) won the high jump (6-7 ½) and
Mark Balmes (So., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) the discus (154-6).
Branden Miller (Jr., Winfield, Ill./Wheaton-North) was second in the discus (145-9) and third in the hammer throw (150-5).
Ron Banks (Jr., Waukegan, Ill.) was second in the long jump (20-9), as was
Cale Brown (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) in the triple jump (43-3 ¾) and
Quenten Austin (So., Vandalia, Ill./Community) in the javelin (164-5).
Mike Brown (Jr., St. Charles, Ill./East) was third in the 100-meter dash (11.30), as was
Kendric Cornelius (So., Palatine, Ill.) in the 200-meter dash (22.66),
J.D. Fuller (Jr., Woodstock, Ill.) in the 1.500-meter run (4:03.25),
Nick Blakey (Sr., St. Joseph, Ill./St. Joseph-Ogden) in the long jump (20-1).
The Red Men also picked up a win from their 4x400-meter relay team of Cornelius,
Mike Gulik (So., Elgin, Ill./Burlington-Central), Brown and
Aryan Avant (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) with a time of 3:20.80.
Carthage will split squads this week, sending part of the team to Romeoville, Ill., on Thursday-Saturday, April 10-12 for the Chicagoland Outdoor Track and Field Championship at the Lewis University Stadium (1 p.m./9 a.m./Noon). The remainder of the team will travel to Lisle, Ill., on Saturday, April 12 for the Benedictine University (Ill.) "Eagle Invitational" at the Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex, beginning at 10 a.m.
