The Carthage College men's track and field team sent a partial squad to the April 24-26 Drake University Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, one of the two most prestigious track and field meets in the country, along with the Penn Relays.
Trevor James (Sr., Maywood, Ill./Chicago-Hope Academy) cleared a school-record 7-2 ½ to finish second in the high jump at the Drake Relays.
James competed against 25 other jumpers, 18 of those from NCAA Division I schools His leap matched the second-highest all-time mark by an NCAA Division III high jumper. The NCAA Division III record of 7-4 ¼ was set by Kym Orr from the State University of New York-Fredonia and was set in 1985 and matched by Eric Taylor-Perry from Wheaton College (Mass.) in 1997. James is now tied for second with Wisconsin-Stout's Mike Kundinger from 1993 and Raheim Greenridge, also from Wheaton (Mass.) from 2000.
In recognition of his accomplishment, James was named U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III "National Athlete of the Week" on April 28, as well as a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin "athlete of the week."
