The Carthage College men's track and field team (51-11 indoor record), ranked 21st in the March 12 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, finished eighth at the Friday-Saturday, March 14-15 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb.

Wisconsin-La Crosse won the 67-team championship with 63.50 points, followed by Wisconsin-Eau Claire second at 48, Wisconsin-Oshkosh third at 37.50, Wartburg College fourth at 26, the University of Mount Union fifth at 25.50, Wisconsin-Whitewater sixth at 25, CCIW-member North Central College seventh at 21 and Carthage eighth with 18 points.  The Red Men's previous-best finish at the indoor championship was a tie for 21st place last year.

Carthage's Trevor James (Sr., Maywood, Ill./Chicago-Hope Academy) won the high jump (7-0 1/4).  James won a national title in the outdoor high jump in 2012 (6-10 ¼) and finished second in last year's NCAA indoor event on a tie-breaker (7-0 ¼).  This time around, James won the tie-breaker over Wartburg's Jonas Elusme.

Derrik Guyette (Jr., Hortonville, Wis.) finished fourth in the shot put (Carthage-record 55-5 ¾) and sixth in the weight throw (Carthage-record 62-0 1/2).  Both James and Guyette was named U.S. Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association All-America.  The Red Men's other qualifier, Darin Ward (Fr., Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs), tied for 10th place in the 60-meter hurdles (lifetime-best 8.19) but did not reach the finals.

"After Derrik Guyette finished fourth in the shot put," said Carthage coach Brett Witt, "we were in fourth place as a team.  I knew that wouldn't last--it was still early in the meet.  I thought a top-15 finish was very realistic.  Then, with three events to go, I started figuring out what schools still had opportunities to score points and potentially pass us.  I just sat back and watched the majority of things work in our favor."

"In addition to being a top-two team at the CCIW Indoor Track and Field Championship, one of our goals was to be a top-15 team at the nationals," pointed out Witt.  "So, to finish in the top-10 was even better than we had hoped for.  I couldn't be prouder of this team.  This is, by far, the most-talented, motivated and hardest-working team I've had the pleasure of coaching at Carthage, and they deserve this successes."

"Far and away," concluded Witt, "this is the best indoor track and field season in Carthage's history, "but as I've already mentioned to the team, now we need to relight the fire and try to repeat this same success during the outdoor season."
