No. 4 Men's Volleyball Goes 4-0 to win its March 15-16 Home Tournament

Red Men Play Host to MSOE on Wednesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The Carthage College men's volleyball team (15-5, 5-0 Continental Volleyball Conference West Division), ranked fourth in the March 11 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, went 4-0 to win the Saturday-Sunday, March 15-16 Carthage Tournament at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. 

On Saturday, March 15, Carthage swept No. 14 Baruch College (16-7), 3-0, before sweeping Thiel College (10-12), also 3-0.  The Red Men's winning set scores over the Bearcats were 25-18, 25-19 and 25-9, and their winning scores over Tomcats were 25-17, 25-20 and 25-19.  On Sunday, March 16, Carthage defeated No. 7 Nazareth (14-7), 3-1, before sweeping Ramapo (16-7), 3-0.  The Red Men's winning set scores over the Golden Flyers were 20-25, 25-18, 25-14 and 25-15, and their winning scores over the Roadrunners were 25-14, 25-16, 25-27 and 25-9.  Carthage has won nine-straight matches since losing to Cardinal Stritch University on Feb. 20.
 
In the other matches on Saturday, Baruch outlasted No. 16 Ramapo College, 3-2; No. 7 Nazareth College got by Thiel College, 3-2; and Nazareth (14-5) defeated Ramapo (15-6), 3-1.  In Sunday's non-Carthage matches, Baruch (17-7) defeated Nazareth (14-6), 3-1; Ramapo (16-6) outlasted Thiel (10-13), 3-2; and Baruch (18-7) swept Thiel (10-14), 3-0.
 
In the win over Baruch, Carthage's Jim Schultz (Sr., Salem, Wis./Westosha Central)  collected a match-high 11 kills with a .471 attack percentage and three block assists.  Jon Storm (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) had 10 kills and a .409 attack percentage, while J.P. Tulaka (So., Westmont, Ill./downers Grove, Ill./North) had nine kills, a .750 mark (9-0-12) and two block assists . Setter Connor Wexter (Sr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 11.67 assists per set.  Chris Kaimis and Jack McKee had five kills each for the Bearcats. 

In the Thiel contest, Schultz had a match-high 17 kills and hit .727 (17-1-22), while Storm had 15 kills and hit .429.  Wexter averaged 14.0 assists per set.  Against Nazareth, Jim Schultz led the Red Men with 16 kills and a .290 attack percentage, while Jon Storm had 12 kills and hit .321 with two block assists.  Connor Wexter averaged 13.0 assists per set with four block assists.  In the tournament-finale against Ramapo, Jon Storm and Jeff Beach (Sr., St. Charles, Ill./North) each had 12 kills, with Beach hitting .800 (12-0-15) with three block assists.  Connor Wexter averaged 13.67 assists per set against the Roadrunners.
 
Carthage plays host to conference-opponent the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday, March 19 in a 7 p.m. contest, also at Tarble Arena.
