Box Score 4 The Carthage College men's volleyball team (3-3, 0-0 Continental Volleyball Conference), ranked seventh in the Jan. 28 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, went 3-1 at the Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 1-2 Nazareth College "Golden Flyer Invitational" at the Robert A. Kidera Gym in Rochester, N.Y.
Carthage opened tournament play on Saturday, Feb. 1 with a 3-1 win over No. 15 Medaille College (1-2) and a 3-0 sweep of Hilbert College (3-5). The Red Men's winning set scores over the Mavericks were 32-30, 17-25, 25-19 and 25-19, and their winning scores over Hawks were 25-8, 25-16 and 25-21.
On Sunday, Feb. 2, Carthage was swept by No. 13 Elmira College (6-2), 3-0, before sweeping Thiel College (3-3), 3-0. The Soaring Eagles' winning set scored over the Red men were 27-25, 25-21 and 25-22, and Carthage's winning scores over Thiel were 25-19, 29-27 and 25-23.
In the win over Medaille,
Jon Storm (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) led Carthage with 18 kills, a .333 attack percentage and three block assists.
Jim Schultz (Sr., Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) had 10 kills and hit. 286, while
J.P. Tulaka (So., Westmont, Ill./Downers Grove-North) collected seven kills with two block solos and two block assists. Setter
Connor Wexter (Sr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 10.75 assists per set. In the Hilbert contest,
Spencer Dove (So., Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) led the way with seven kills.
In the loss to Elmira,
Jim Schultz led the way with 10 kills, while J.P Tulaka had eight kills, one block solo and four block assists. Schultz tallied 16 kills and hit .265 in the win over Thiel. while Storm had 11 kills with a .562 attack percentage. Setter
Tyler Saieg (Fr., Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove-North) averaged 14.0 assists per set against the Tomcats.
Carthage travels to Cincinnati on Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 8-9 to play in the CVC East/West Crossover Tournament at the College of Mount St. Joseph's Harrington Center. The Red Men play No. 10 Stevenson University (5-1) on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 8:30 a.m. (all times EST) and No. 3 Juniata College (8-1) at 1:30 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 9, Carthage takes on Eastern Mennonite University at 8:30 a.m.
