The Carthage College men's track and field team (10-0 indoor record), ranked 19th in the pre-season U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, opened its indoor season by winning the Friday-Saturday, Jan. 17-18 Private College Invitational at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center in Kenosha, Wis.
The Red Men won the 11-team event with 173 points, followed by the University of Chicago second at 98.50, the Milwaukee School of Engineering third at 88, Concordia University (Wis.) fourth at 56, Benedictine University (Ill.) fifth at 50, Wisconsin-Parkside sixth at 40, Concordia University (Ill.) seventh at 30, Cardinal Stritch University eighth at 26, Carroll University (Wis.) ninth at 23.50, North Park University 10th at 17 and Wisconsin Lutheran College 11th with nine points.
Carthage's
Derrik Guyette (Jr., Hortonville, Wis.) won both the in the shot put (53-1 ¾) and the weight throw (57-8). The Red Men also collected wins from
Darin Ward (Fr., Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs) in the 55-meter high hurdles (7.81),
Calvin Callahan (Jr., Bedford, Ind./North Lawrence) in the pole vault (14-6) and
Quenten Austin (So., Vandalia, Ill./community) in the heptathlon (4,482 points).
Mike Brown (Jr., St. Charles, Ill./East) was second in the 55-mter dash (6.62), as was
Aryan Avant (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) in the 200-meter dash (23.17),
Mike Gulik (So., Elgin, Ill./Burlington-Central) in the 400-meter dash (51.85),
Mark Balmes (So., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) in the shot put (52-1 ½) and
Dan Hoffman (So., Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) in the heptathlon (4,009 points). Carthage also picked up a win from its 4x400-meter relay team of
Aryan Avant,
Seth Petty (So., Pittsfield, Ill./Pittsfield),
Mike Brown and
Mike Gulik.
Carthage travels to Naperville, Ill., on Friday, Jan. 24 for the North Central College "Cardinal Opener" at the Al B. Carius Track, beginning at 4 p.m..
