Box Score The Carthage College men's soccer team (8-3-0, 0-0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) upset No. 20 Wisconsin-Whitewater (8-1-0), 1-0, on Sunday night, Sept. 29 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. The Warhawks were ranked third in the Sept. 24 National Soccer Coaches Association of America North Region poll, while the Red Men were ranked 10th in the Central Region poll.
The two teams battled through 81 minutes of scoreless soccer. Carthage broke the ice at 81:09 on a goal by
Michael Dombrowski (Jr., Johnsburg, Ill.), assisted by
Arnoldo Reyes. Wisconsin-Whitewater's Ty McCoy missed on a header shot at 87:05, and John Gottwald missed another scoring attempt at 88:21. The Red Men out-shot the Warhawks, 11-5. Carthage goalkeeper
Nick Huftalin (Jr., Rockford, Ill./Winnebago) earned his second shutout of the season, along with two saves.
"Sunday night is always a tricky day to play," said Carthage coach
Steve Domin, "but I think we did a good job bouncing back from a game on Thursday and being a bit banged up. Credit to
Arnoldo Reyes' through ball to
Michael Dombrowski, who created his own space to a head-steady finish. We were knocking on the door all night, and it felt good to get that goal to drop. Truthfully, this one felt like we could have won it in the first half by a handful going away. We have to put away our setters early. Our back line did a solid job. UW-Whitewater is a very worthy opponent."
Carthage opens its CCIW-schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 2 by traveling to Wheaton, Ill., to take on No. 8 Wheaton College (Ill., 6-3-0) in a 7 p.m. game at Joe Bean Stadium.
