Carthage Falls to No. 3 St. Olaf

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's soccer team battled No. 3 St. Olaf on Sunday afternoon at Art Keller Field, falling 2-0 to the Oles.

The Firebirds created opportunities throughout the match and kept the contest within reach during the opening half, but St. Olaf scored once in each half to secure the victory.

How it Happened
  • Carthage came out looking to challenge the Oles, with Eli Schoffstall recording the Firebirds' first shot in the fourth minute.
  • Dennis Valle followed with another Carthage attempt at 5:05 as the Firebirds looked to establish an early attacking presence.
  • Owen Malinowski made the first save of the match in the 20th minute, stopping a St. Olaf attempt to keep the contest scoreless.
  • Carthage responded with a pair of opportunities moments later. Emmitt Hansen recorded a shot at 20:04 before Neil Mayer put a shot on target at 20:09, forcing a save from the St. Olaf goalkeeper.
  • St. Olaf broke through in the 26th minute when Ryan Wilson redirected a free kick into the goal to give the Oles a 1-0 advantage.
  • Carthage continued to compete following the goal and made several substitutions throughout the remainder of the opening half.
  • The Firebirds entered halftime trailing 1-0 after recording four shots during the opening 45 minutes.
  • Carthage made halftime adjustments, bringing Valle and Dominic Gadalinski back into the match as the Firebirds looked for an equalizer.
