The Carthage College women's volleyball team (4-0, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 30th in the pre-season American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, went 4-0 to win the Friday-Saturday, Aug. 30-31 Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament I at the Whitewater, Wis.
Carthage opened its 2013 season with a pair of wins on Friday, Aug. 30, sweeping Transylvania University (1-1), 3-0, at the Kachel Gymnasium before upsetting No. 13 Wisconsin-Whitewater (1-1) by a 3-1 margin at the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena. On Saturday, Aug. 31, the Lady Reds defeated Wisconsin-Oshkosh (1-3), 3-1, before sweeping Lawrence University (1-3) by a 3-0 margin.
The Lady Reds' winning set scores over the Pioneers were 25-21, 25-23 and 25-21. Rachel Fields (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Oak Park-Fenwick) led Carthage with 10 kills and a .429 attack percentage, while setter Karen Chin (So., Mundelein, Ill.) averaged 9.67 assists per set. Carthage defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater by scores of 25-22, 25-18, 12-25, 27-25. Emily Heuermann (So. Washington, Ill.) paced the Lady Reds with 15 kills and .343 attack percentage, while Rachel Mickey (Fr., Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) had eight kills and seven blocks (1 solo, 6 assisted). Chin averaged 8.25 assists per set against the Warhawks.
Carthage's winning scores over Wisconsin-Oshkosh were 29-27, 25-16, 21-25 and 25-15. Angelica Walinski (Sr., Skokie, Ill./Niles North) led the way with 20 kills and a .419 attack percentage. Emily Heuermann had 14 kills and hit .262, while Rachel Mickey added 10 kills and hit .320. Karen Chin averaged 13.50 assists per set. The Lady Reds' scores in the sweep of Lawrence were 25-20, 25-15 and 25-13. Emily Heuremann had 11 kills and Rachel Fields 10 kills with a .444 attack mark.
Carthage is idle until Wednesday, Sept. 11 when the Lady Reds face a re-match with Wisconsin-Whitewater and a contest with Carroll University (Wis.) in a triangular at Carroll's Van Male Field House in Waukesha, Wis.
