The Carthage College men's track and field team (41-19 outdoor record) finished fourth at the Friday-Saturday, April 19-20 Augustana College (Ill.) “Meet of Champions” at Ericson Field in Rock Island, Ill. 

The host-Vikings won the 10-team event with 201.50 points, followed by Wisconsin-Platteville second at 161.75, Wisconsin-Whitewater third at 144.50, Carthage fourth at 112, Monmouth College fifth at 99.50, Wisconsin-Stevens Point sixth at 98, Luther College seventh at 59.50, St. Ambrose University eighth at 57, Loras College ninth at 43.25 and Washington University (Mo.) 10th with 10 points.
 
Carthage's Mark Balmes (Fr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) won the discus (Carthage-record 169-7) and broke a 1974 mark of 168-5 set by John Buesing.  Balmes also took third place in the shot put (49-0 1/4).  Derrik Guyette (So., Hortonville, Wis.) won the shot put (50-6 ¼) and finished second in the discus (160-11) and third in the hammer throw (168-8).  Trevor James (Jr., Maywood, Ill./Chicago-Hope Academy) won the high jump (6-6 3/4).  Xavier Perkins (Fr., Bolingbrook, Ill.) finished second in the high jump (6-4 ¾).  Eric Schmidt (Sr., Kewaunee, Wis.) was fourth in the hammer throw (164-11) and fifth in the discus (150-10).
 
Carthage splits squads on the weekend of April 26-27, sending part of the team to Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday-Saturday, April 26-27 for the Drake University Relays, and part of the team to De Pere, Wis., for the Wisconsin Private College Track and Field Championship at St. Norbert College's Donald J. Schneider Stadium.
