Box Score 2 The Carthage College men's volleyball team (24-8, 5-1 Continental Volleyball Conference), ranked fourth in the April 9 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, lost to No. 8 Juniata College (23-11), 3-1, on Saturday, April 13 in the semifinals of the Continental Volleyball Conference Tournament at Thiel College's Beeghly Gymnasium in Greenville, Pa. The Eagles' winning set scores over the Red Men were 27-29, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-19.
Carthage opened tournament play on Friday, April 12 with a 3-1 first-round win over Thiel College (20-12) The Red Men's winning set scores over the Lions were 25-17, 26-28, 25-21 and 25-23. Carthage now awaits word from the NCAA regarding an at-large berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship. The field for that nine-team event will be announced on Sunday night.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 9 Stevenson University (24-11, 6-2 CVC) outlasted the Milwaukee School of Engineering (7-19, 2-4 CVC), 3-2, in a first round match on April 12, before losing to No. 3 the University of California-Santa Cruz (15-6, 5-1 CVC), 3-2, in an April 13semifinal contest. Juniata (24-11) swept UC-Santa Cruz (15-7), 3-0, in the April 13 championship match.
In Carthage's win over Thiel in the first round,
Jon Storm (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) collected a match-high 22 kills with a .487 attack percentage.
Jim Schultz (Jr., Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) had 25 kills and hit .333,
Pat Barry (Jr., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) had 14 kills and hit .275, and J. P. Tulaka (Fr., Westmont, Ill./Downers Grove-North) added 10 kills with a .450 attack percentage and three block assists. Setter
Connor Wexter (Jr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), the current NCAA Division III leader in assists, averaged 14.74 assists per set. Dante McCoy led the Lions with 16 kills.
In the loss to Juniata in the semifinals, Ross Madden led the Eagles with 19 kills and a .275 attack percentage.
Pat Barry (Jr., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) had 13 kills for the Red Men, and
Jon Storm 12 kills.
Connor Wexter averaged 11.0 assist per set, and
Jeff Beach (Jr., St. Charles, Ill./North) added six kills and seven block assists.
