Box Score 3 The Carthage College men's volleyball team (15-6, 3-0 Continental Volleyball Conference), ranked fourth in the March 5 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, completed a three-game sweep at the Continental Volleyball Conference Weekend I Tournament on Saturday, March 9 with a 3-0 win over Fontbonne University (1-12, 0-3 CVC) at the Milwaukee School of Engineering's Kern Center in Milwaukee. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Griffins were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-16.
On Friday, March 8, Carthage outlasted No. 4 the University of California-Santa Cruz (4-5, 1-1 CVC), 3-2, before sweeping Fontbonne, 3-0. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Banana Slugs were 25-18, 23-25, 27-25, 21-25 and 20-18, and their winning scores over the Griffins were 25-17, 25-13 and 25-15. Friday's Fontbonne contest was a conference match, but the Saturday match was a non-conference event.
In the win over California-Santa Cruz,
Jon Storm (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) led the Red Men with 20 kills and a .228 attack percentage.
Pat Barry (Jr., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) had 19 kills with a block solo and four block assists, while J.P. Tulaka (Fr., Westmont, Ill./Downers Grove-North) collected 16 kills and hit .682 (16-1-22). Setter
Connor Wexter (Jr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), with 71 assists and a 14.20 set average, fell just short of a Carthage match record of 74 assists in five sets set by Scott Marita versus Rivier College on Jan. 18, 2009. Salvatore LaCavera led the Banana Slugs with 17 kills. Jake Landel had 16 kills and four block assists, while Harley Frost collected 15 kills, also with four block assists.
Okello Hope (Fr., Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) and
Matt Klingspohn (So., Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) each had 10 kills in the Red Men's Friday-night win over Fontbonne, with Klingspohn hitting .280.
Race Munger (Jr., Torrance, Calif./Rolling Hills Prep) collected three block solos and three block assists. In the Saturday Fontbonne match,
Pat Barry collected a match-high 18 kills with a .410 attack percentage, and
Jon Storm had 13 kills with a .429 mark. Braxton Payne led Fontbonne with 13 kills.
Carthage returns to the Kern Center on Wednesday, March 13 for a 7 p.m. conference match with MSOE (4-10, 1-2 CVC).
