The Carthage College men's track and field team (7-7 outdoor record) finished second at the Thursday-Friday March 28-29 for the North Central College “First Chance Invitational” at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in Naperville, Ill.
North Central (Ill.) won the 11-team event with 264 points, followed by Carthage second at 123, Benedictine University (Ill.) third at 72, Harper College fourth at 68, Wheaton College (Ill.) fifth at 66, the College of DuPage sixth at 63, Wisconsin-Stevens Point seventh at 27, Wisconsin-Parkside eighth at 25, Wisconsin-Oshkosh ninth at 23, Wisconsin-La Crosse 10th at 17 and Wisconsin-Stout 11th with seven points.
Carthage's Mark Balmes (Fr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) won the discus (157-2) and finished fourth in both the hammer throw (143-0) and the shot put (46-10 3/4). Kendric Cornelius won the long jump (21-11) and was fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.38).
Cale Brown (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) won the triple jump (44-7 1/2).
Branden Miller (So., Winfield, Ill./Wheaton-North) took second in the javelin (181-1) and third in both the discus (142-7) and the hammer throw (160-0).
Eric Schmidt (Sr., Kewaunee, Wis.) took second in the hammer throw (160-10) and fourth in the discus (140-9).
Trevor James (Jr., Maywood, Ill./Chicago-Hope Academy) was second in the high jump (6-4 3/4), as was
Nick Blakey in the triple jump (40-8 1/4).
Carthage travels to Romeoville, Ill., on Friday-Saturday, April 5-6 for the Chicagoland Outdoor Track and Field Championship at the Lewis University Stadium (2 p.m. both days).
