Box Score 2 The Carthage College men's volleyball team (8-2, 0-0 Continental Volleyball Conference), ranked second in the Feb. 5 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, went 3-1 at the Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 9-10 Continental Volleyball Conference East/West Crossover Tournament at Thiel College's Beeghly Gymnasium in Greenville, Pa.
On Saturday, Feb. 9, Carthage opened tournament play with a 3-0 loss to Stevenson University (3-1) before outlasting No. 4 Juniata College (5-3) by a 3-2 margin. The Mustangs' winning set scores over the Red Men were 25-18, 25-18 and 25-17, and Carthage's winning scores over Juniata were 24-26, 27-25, 25-22, 23-25 and 15-10.
On Sunday, Feb. 10, Carthage swept Cairn University and Thiel by 3-0 scores. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Crimson Eagles were 27-25, 25-18 and 25-17, and their winning scores over the Tomcats were 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17.
In the loss to Stevenson, the Mustangs' Austin Jacoby collected a match-high 14 kills and hit .464, while Carthage's
Pat Barry (Jr., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) had nine kills. In the win over Juniata, Barry had a match-high 24 kills with a .333 attack percentage and six block assists.
Jon Storm (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) had 20 kills and hit .500, with
Jim Schultz (Jr., Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) adding 10 kills. Setter Spencer Dove (Fr., Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) averaged 11.8 assists per set.
In the Cairn match, Barry collected 18 kills with seven block assists. In the Thiel contest, he had 14 kills, while Storm had 10 kills with a .444 attack percentage. Dove averaged 11.0 assists per set against the Lions.
Carthage plays host to Cardinal Stritch University (10-1) on Thursday, Feb. 14 in a 7:30 p.m. match at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
