The Carthage College men's indoor track and field team (26-7), ranked 10th in the Feb. 6 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches of America Midwest Region poll, finished third at the Saturday, Feb. 9 Chicagoland Indoor Track and Field Championship at North Central College's Al Carius Track in Naperville, Ill.
North Central (Ill.) won the 20-team event with 219.50, out-distancing second-place Illinois-Chicago with 72 points. Carthage was third at 67.50, followed by the University of Chicago fourth at 48, Lewis University fifth at 36, Wheaton College (Ill.) sixth at 31, the University of St. Francis (Ill.) seventh at 30, Chicago State University eighth at 26, Benedictine University (Ill.) ninth at 19,50, Aurora University 10th at 17.50, St. Xavier University 11th at 16, Harper College 12th at 15, Concordia University (Chicago) 13th at 14, Valparaiso University 14th at 10, the College of DuPage and Judson University (Ill.) tied for 15th place with nine points each, Roosevelt University 17th with eight points, the Illinois Institute of Technology 18th with five and Elmhurst College tied with Trinity Christian College for 19th place with four points each.
Eric Schmidt (Sr., Kewaunee, Wis.) won the weight throw (56-3).
Derrik Guyette (So., Hortonville, Wis.) was second in both the weight throw (54-5 ½) and shot put (50-8 ¾).
Jake Mahaffey (Sr., Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) was second in the 5,000-meter run (15:14.69). Mark Balmes (Fr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) was third in the shot put (49-11 1/4). The Red Men 4x400-meter relay team of Kendric Cornelius (Fr., Palatine, Ill.),
Cale Brown (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley), Matt Hellyer (Jr., Algonquin, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee Crown) and
Aryan Avant (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) took second place.
Carthage travels to Stevens Point, Wis., on Saturday, Feb. 16 for the Wisconsin-Stevens Point “Eastbay Invitational” at the Quandt Fieldhouse, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
