Unfortunately, an anticipated high-jump showdown fizzled out. Carthage's
Trevor James (Jr., Maywood, Ill./Chicago Hope Academy), the defending-national-champion in the NCAA Division III outdoor high jump, was expected to compete against defending-indoor-champion Zach Mixdorf (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Mixdorf won last year's indoor title with a 6-11 leap at Grinnell College, while James won the outdoor championship with a 6-10 ¼ effort in Claremont, Calif. Mixdorf, however, fell ill on Friday and did not make the trip to Kenosha. James won the event on Friday with a 6-10 ¼ effort, equaling his mark from last spring.
Carthage's
Derrik Guyette (So., Hortonville, Wis.) won both the shot put (51-10 ½) and the weight throw (58-9 ¼), and
Cale Brown (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) won the triple jump (45-7 ¼).
Eric Schmidt (Sr., Kewaunee, Wis.) was second in the weight throw (56-8 ½), as was Kendric Cornelius (Fr., Palatine, Ill.) in the long jump (22-3) and
Nick Blakey (St. Joseph, Ill./St. Joseph-Ogden) in the triple jump (41-7 ¾). Mark Balmes (Fr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) was third in the weight throw (48-0).
Carthage travels to Bloomington, Ill., on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 1-2 for the Illinois Wesleyan University “Bob Keck Invitational” at the Shirk Center Fieldhouse (3 p.m./11 a.m.).
