Men's Volleyball Opens at Home with a 3-1 Win over Quincy on Jan. 20

Thiel Tournament Next for the Red Men on Saturday-Sunday

Box Score The Carthage College men's volleyball team (1-1, 0-0 Continental Volleyball Conference), ranked second in the 2013 pre-season American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, opened its home schedule on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 20 with a 3-1 win over Quincy University (3-3) at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.  The Red Men's winning scores over the Hawks were 26-28, 25-14, 25-14 and 25-17.
 
Carthage had set point at 25-24 and 26-25 before losing the first set, 28-26.  The Red Men opened up a 15-9 lead in the second set, which they extended to 11 points, 21-10, en route to an 11-point decision, 25-14.  Carthage jumped out to 12-5 lead in set three.  The lead went to nine points, 20-11, and the Red Men went on to win by 11 points, 25-14.  The Red Men got the jump on the Hawks again in the fourth set, going up by eight points, 13-5, and extending the margin to 10, 17-7.  The Red Men wound up winning the fourth-and-final set by eight points, 25-17.

Pat Barry (Jr., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) led Carthage with a match-high 17 kills and a .438 attack percentage.  Jim Schultz (Jr., Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) had 12 kills and a .450 attack percentage, along with five block assists, and Jon Storm (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) added 11 kills and hit. 588.  J.P. Tulaka (Fr., Westmont, Ill./Downers Grove-North) had six kills with eight blocks (3 solo, 5 assisted), and setter Connor Wexter (Jr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 10.75 assists per set.  Steven Battaglia led the Hawks with 11 kills.

Carthage travels to Greenville, Pa., on Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 26-27 to play in the Thiel College Tournament at Beeghly Gymnasium.  On Saturday, Jan. 26, the Red Men take on Penn State-Behrend at 5 p.m. (all times EST) and Thiel at 7 p.m.  On Sunday, Jan. 27, Carthage plays Penn State-Altoona at 10 a.m. and Eastern Mennonite University at 2 p.m.
