Men's Volleyball Defeats NCAA I Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne for the Second Time This Season

No. 3 Red Men Travel to St. Xavier on Wednesday

The Carthage College men's volleyball team (21-4, 2-1 Continental Volleyball Conference), ranked third in the March 13 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, defeated NCAA Division I Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (10-12), 3-1, on Saturday, March 24 at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. 
 
Carthage's winning set scores were 24-26, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-15.  It was the Red Men's second win this year over the Mastodons, with Carthage winning a 3-1 contest on Feb. 17 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
 
The first set was tied at 20, 21, 22, 23- and 24 before the Mastodons won the final two points for a 26-24 decision.  In the second set, the Red Men broke a 14-14 tie to take a 15-14 lead and went on to win by a 25-23 margin.  Carthage took the lead, to stay, 8-7 in the third set and won  by six, 25-19.  Leading, 12-9, in the fourth-and-final set, the Red Men pulled away to a seven-point lead, 18-11.  Carthage made it a 10-point margin, 24-14, and won by 10, 25-15.
 
The Red Men's Randy Hansen (Sr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) had 18 kills with a .238 attack percentage, along with four block assists.  Pat Barry (So., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) had 12 kills but committed 10 errors and hit just .050, along with five block assists, while Matt Yanz (Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill./Naperville-Central) added had nine kills and hit .318.  Tyler Frings (Sr., Hubertus, Wis./Milwaukee-Pius XI) set a Carthage match record for four sets with 14 total blocks (3 solos and 11 assists).  Setter Connor Wexter (So., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 10.25 assists per set.  Eddie Riviera led the Mastodons with 19 kills.
 
Carthage travels to Chicago on Wednesday, March 28 to play St. Xavier University (7-17) in a 7 p.m. match at the Shannon Center.
