The Carthage College men's volleyball team (15-4, 2-1 Continental Volleyball Conference), ranked third in the March 6 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, went 4-0 to win the Saturday-Sunday, March 10-11 Fontbonne Tournament at Maybee Gymnasium in St. Louis, Mo.
Carthage won a pair of matches on Saturday, March 10, defeating No. 5 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (16-6), 3-1, before sweeping Thiel College (13-12) by a 3-0 margin. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Engineers were 25-14, 23-25, 25-12 and 25-22, and their winning set scores over the Tomcats were 29-27, 25-20 and 25-10. On Sunday, March 11, Carthage swept Fontbonne (1-18) and Lindenwood University (13-8), both by 3-0 scores. The Red Men's winning scores over the host-Griffins were 25-14, 25-22 and 28-26, and their winning scores over the Lions were 26-24, 25-22 and 25-11.
Carthage's
Randy Hansen (Sr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) had a match-high 20 kills with a .371 attack percentage against M.I.T, while
Pat Barry (So., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) had 19 kills and hit. 552 with a block solo and four block assists.
Tyler Frings (Sr., Hubertus, Wis./Milwaukee-Pius XI) added nine kills with five block assists. In the Thiel contest, Barry had 17 kills, hit .297 and collected a pair of block assists.
Matt Yanz (Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill./Naperville-Central) had eight kills and hit .889, while Hansen had eight kills with a .316 attack percentage and three block assists,
In the win over Fontbonne, Hansen had eight kills and hit. 500, while
Jeff Beach (So., St. Charles, Ill./North) had eight kills with a .429 attack percentage, two block solos and six block assists.
Race Munger (So., Torrance, Calif./Rolling Hills Prep) had seven kills and seven block assists. In the fourth-and-final match versus Lindenwood, Hansen had 14 kills and hit .286, Yanz nine kills with a .615 mark, and Barry eight kills, a .300 attack percentage and four block assists.
The Red Men play host to the Carthage/Milwaukee School of Engineering Tournament on Friday-Sunday, March 16-18 at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. On Friday, March 16, Carthage plays host to Eastern Mennonite University at 4 p.m. and New York University at 8 p.m. On Saturday, March 17, the Red Men entertain Nazareth College in a 5 p.m. contest. On Sunday, March 18, Carthage takes on Elmira College at 9 a.m. and Juniata College at Noon.
