The Carthage College men's tennis team (4-2, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) traveled to Fond du Lac, Wis., on Sunday, Feb. 19 for a pair of indoor matches at Centre Court. Carthage blanked Ripon College (0-3), 9-0, before defeating Wisconsin-La Crosse (2-5) by a 6-3 margin.
In the win over Wisconsin-La Crosse, Carthage's
Jeff Lotz Jr. (Jr., Racine, Wis., 9-3), ranked 23rd nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and fifth in the Central Region, defeated the Eagles' Nick Piotrowski at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Daneric Hazelman (Sr., Lautoka, Fiji Islands, 8-3) won over Peter Stadum at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
Matt Whiteside (Sr., Sacramento, Calif./Natomas Pacific Pathway Prep, 2-4) was a winner at No. 3 singles, as was
Alex McLean (Sr., Belleville, Ill./West, 5-5) at No. 4 singles.
Nick Boomgarden (Sr., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 7-6) lost at No. 5 singles, but
Brian Howes (Jr., Bartlett, Ill., 7-2) was a winner at No. 6 singles.
The Red Men's No. 1 doubles team of Lotz and Hazelman (10-1), ranked sixth in the region was an 8-1 winner over UW-Eau Claire's Piotrowski and Stadum. Carthage's No. 2 doubles team of Whiteside and Boomgarden (3-3) lost to the Eagles, as did the Red Men's No. 3 team of McLean and
Conor Moon (Fr., Sussex, Wis./Woodstock, Ill.-Marian Central Catholic, 1-5).
Carthage travels to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday, Feb. 25 to play a double-dual match at Coe College's Clark Racquet Center. The Red Men take on Coe at 9 a.m. and Wartburg College at Noon.
