Carthage 3, St. Xavier 0
The Carthage College men's volleyball team (6-1, 0-0 Continental Volleyball Conference), ranked first in the Feb. 7 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, swept St. Xavier University (4-9), 3-0, on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Cougars were 25-10, 25-18 and 25-19.
Carthage broke a 5-5 tie in the first set with a 17-4 run to take a 22-9 lead, en route to a 25-10 decision. The Red Men jumped out to a 7-1 in set two and went on to win by seven points, 25-18. In the third-and-final set, Carthage broke a 9-9 tie with four unanswered points to take a 13-9 lead. The Red Men extended their margin to seven points, 18-11, en route to a six-point win, 25-19.
Carthage hit .405 as a team, while holding St. Xavier to a .131 mark.
Tyler Frings (Sr., Hubertus, Wis./Milwaukee-Pius XI) led the Red Men with 11 kills and a .625 attack percentage (11-1-16) and block assists.
Randy Hansen (Sr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) also had 11 kills and hit .350 (11-4-20).
Pat Barry (So., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) collected 10 kills and hit .450 (10-1-20) with three block assists, while
Matt Yanz (Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill./Naperville-Central) added 8 kills in nine attempts for a .778 attack mark. Setter
Connor Wexter (So., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 11.67 assists per set. Aaron Porter topped St. Xavier with nine kills and a .450 attack percentage.
On Sunday, Feb. 12, the Red Men entertain Lindenwood University in a 1 p.m. contest, also at Tarble Arena.
