The Carthage College men's volleyball team (20-10, 8-0 Midwest-III Volleyball Conference), ranked fourth in the March 29 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, closed out its regular-season schedule on Wednesday, March 30 with a 3-0 win over King College (Tenn., 8-7) at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Tornado were 25-20, 25-12 and 25-18.
Carthage's Tom O'Connell (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) had 11 kills and hit .474 with eight digs. Tim Walker (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University H.S.) had 10 kills with a .471 attack percentage and six block solos, while Randy Hansen(Jr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) had 10 kills and hit .391 with five block solos. James Friddle topped King with 10 kills and a .364 attack percentage.
On Friday-Saturday, April 1-2, the Red Men travel to Greenville, Pa., for the Midwest-III Conference Tournament at Thiel College's Beeghly Gymnasium. The tournament gets underway on Friday, April 1 with second-seeded the Milwaukee School of Engineering (11-16, 6-2 M-III) playing third-second Thiel College (9-19, 4-4) at 6 p.m. (all times EDT), and fourth-seeded Fontbonne University (7-14, 2-6) taking on fifth-seeded the College of Mount St. Joseph (1-15, 0-8) at 8 p.m., EDT. EDT. Top-seeded Carthage plays the Fontbonne-Mount St. Joseph winner in the first match on Saturday, April 2 at 11 a.m., followed by the MSOE-Thiel loser playing the Fontbonne-Mount St. Joseph loser at 1 p.m.. The tournament concludes with the MSOE-Thiel winner taking the match #3 winner for the championship at 3 p.m.
