The Carthage College men's volleyball team (18-9, 8-0 Midwest-III Volleyball Conference), ranked third in the March 8 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, lost to Quincy University (15-8), 3-1, on Friday, March 11 at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. The Hawks' winning set scores over the Red Men were 25-23, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-17.
Carthage took a 15-8 lead in the opening set. Still leading by three, 19-16, the Red Men fell behind, 20-19. Carthage re-gained the lead, 23-22, but Quincy won the final two points for a 25-23 victory. In the second set, the Hawks led by two, 17-15, before scoring four unanswered points to take a 21-15 lead and winning by six, 25-19. The Red were trailing in the third set, 23-21, before running off the final four points to win by two, 25-23. Quincy opened up an 11-point lead in the fourth-and-final set, 21-10, en route to an eight-point decision, 25-17.
Joseph Ascher topped the Hawks with 16 kills and a .333 attack percentage. Joseph Sokol had 13 kills and hit. 400, while Steven Battaglia added 10 kills with an. 833 attack percentage (10-0-12). Setter Andrew Ouano averaged 11.75 assists per set. Randy Hansen (Jr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) topped the Red Men with 12 kills and a .357 percentage, while Tom O'Connell (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) had nine kills. Setter Connor Wexter (Fr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 9.50 assists per set. Carthage is idle for two weeks before traveling to Chicago on Saturday, March 25 to play St. Xavier University in a 7 p.m. match at the Shannon Center.
