The Carthage College men's volleyball team (4-7), ranked 10th in the Feb. 1 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, was swept by NCAA Division I Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (6-4), 3-0, on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. The Mastodons' winning set scores over the Red Men were 25-21, 28-26 and 25-19.
Carthage fell behind, 13-5, in the first set. The Red Men closed to within three points, 24-21, before losing by a 25-21 margin. In set two, Carthage had an early, 12-7 lead before Indiana-Purdue tied things up, 16-16. Following 10 ties, including 26-26, the Mastodons prevailed, 28-26. In the third set, the Red Men fell behind, 12-5, before closing to within three, 15-12. Indiana-Purdue extended its lead to seven points, 22-15, en route to a six-point decision , 25-19
Darryl Shanks led the Mastodons with 14 kills and a .571 attack percentage, while Elon Fryfield had 11 kills with a .348 attack percentage. Setter Adam Quinn averaged 13.0 assists per set. For Carthage, Randy Hansen (Jr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) had 13 kills with a .367 attack percentage, while setter Connor Wexter (Fr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 12.0 assists per set.
Carthage travels to St. Louis, Mo. on Saturday, Feb. 12 to play Fontbonne University in a 7 p.m. match at Maybee Gymnasium. On Sunday, Feb. 13, the Red Men take on Quincy University in a 1 p.m. contest at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill.
