The Carthage College men's volleyball team (9-8, 4-0 Midwest-III Conference), ranked 10th in the Feb. 15 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, went 3-0 at the Friday-Sunday, Feb. 18-20 M-III Conference Crossover Tournament I at the College of Mount St. Joseph's Harrington Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
On Saturday, Feb. 19, Carthage swept both Mount St. Joseph (1-8, 0-3 M-III) and Thiel College (2-14, 0-2 M-III) by 3-0 scores. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Lions were 25-19, 25-9 and 25-11, and their winning scores over the Tomcats were 25-18, 25-16 and 25-17. On Sunday, Feb. 20, Carthage swept Fontbonne University (6-10, 1-3 M-III), also 3-0, with winning scores of 25-14, 25-9 and 25-15.
Matt Yanz (Jr., Bolingbrook, Ill./Naperville-Central) had 11 kills and hit .600 in the Mount St. Joseph match, while Tyler Parks (Fr., Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had 11 kills with a .238 attack percentage. Setter John Condon (Jr., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) averaged 14.67 assists per set. Jacob McCormick led the Lions with six kills. In the Thiel contest, Randy Hansen (Jr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) had 13 kills and hit. 632 with five block assists, while Tom O'Connell (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) collected 12 kills with a .550 attack percentage. Setter Connor Wexter (Fr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 11.33 assists per set. Dante McCoy topped Thiel with 13 kills. In the win over Fontbonne, Pat Barry (Fr., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola Academy) led the way with eight kills and a .500 attack percentage. while Tyler Parks (Fr., Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had seven kills and hit .333.
Carthage travels to New York, N.Y., on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 25-27 for a series of matches. On Friday, Feb. 25, the Red Men play No. 7 New York University (9-4) in a 7 p.m. (all times EST) match at the Coles Sports Center. On Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 26-27, Carthage plays in the Baruch College Tournament at Baruch's ARC Arena. On Saturday, Feb. 26, the Red Men take on No. 4 the University of California-Santa Cruz (4-6) at 2 p.m. and No. 9 Baruch at 4 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 27, Carthage faces Newbury College at 9:30 a.m. and No. 8 Rivier College at 11:30 a.m.
