The Carthage College men's soccer team (7-4-1, 1-0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) came from behind to defeat the University of Chicago (5-3-2), 2-1, on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. The Maroons were ranked sixth in the Oct. 4 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Central Region poll.
Following a scoreless first period, Chicago scored at 60:20 on an unassisted goal by Steven Chase. Carthage scored twice in the final six minutes to overcome the Chicago lead.
Greg Pignataro (Sr., Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) scored at 84:15, his fourth goal of the year and assisted by
Cale Brown to tie the contest.
Michael Dombrowski (Fr., Johnsburg, Ill.) scored the game-winning goal, his seventh of the year and assisted by
Dylan Tucker, at 89:29. The Red Men out-shot the Maroons, 14-9. Goalkeeper
Milan Tijanic (Jr., Glenview, Ill./Park Ridge-Maine East), this week's CCIW “defensive player of the week,” tallied three saves.
“This was the sixth time this year that we've played a regionally-ranked NCAA opponent,” pointed out head coach
Steve Domin. "Chicago certainly is a great team, and we may have respected that a little too much in the early going. This game had a little of everything, but we are most proud of battling back from a 1-0 deficit. Banged up and missing a good portion of our line-up, we have reach so deep into our roster, and is seems that each day, a different player is showing us they bleed Carthage. The best move of the day was by assistant coach Andrew Gamarra for suggesting that I keep
Greg Pignataro on the pitch late game. Once again, no time to rest with league-power Elmhurst coming in next.”
The Red Men play host to CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (4-4-3, 0-0-1 CCIW) on Saturday, Oct. 8, in a 3:30 p.m. clash at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
