The Carthage College men's volleyball team (2-4), ranked 10th in the Jan. 18 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, went 1-2 at the Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 22-23 Thiel College “AVI Invitational” at Beeghly Gymnasium in Greenville, Pa.

The Red Men were swept by No. 2 Juniata College (6-1), 3-0, on Saturday, Jan. 22. The Eagles' winning set scores over the Red Men were 25-19, 26-24 and 25-21. On Sunday, Jan. 23, Carthage swept Thiel (1-4), 3-0, before losing to No. 4 Nazareth College (3-0) by a 3-1 margin. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Tomcats were 25-19, 25-20 and 26-24, while the Golden Flyers' winning scores over the Red Men were 25-21, 25-20, 27-25 and 25-11.

In the loss to Juniata, Ben Wolff led the Eagles with eight kills and a .583 attack percentage, while setter John Almquist averaged 8.33 assists per set. Randy Hansen (Jr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) led the Red Men with 10 kills and a .238 attack percentage, while setter Connor Wexter (Fr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 10.0 assists per set.

In Carthage's 3-0 win over Thiel, Hansen had 14 kills with a .385 attack percentage and six block assists. Dante McCoy paced the Tomcats with 20 kills and hit .275. In the Red Men's 3-1 loss to Nazareth, Hans Schroeder led the Golden Flyers with 15 kills and a .357 attack percentage, while Bill Gimello had 14 kills and hit .435. Nazareth hit a whopping .435 as a team. Setter E.J. Wells-Spicer averaged 13.50 assists per set. For the Red Men, Hansen had 16 kills, while Jim Schultz (Fr., Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) collected 11 kills and hit .389. Wexter averaged 10.0 assists per set against Nazareth.

Carthage travels to Phoenix, Ariz., on Friday-Sunday, Jan. 28-30 to play four matches at Grand Canyon University's Antelope Gym. On Friday, Jan. 28, the Red Men play the host-Antelopes at 1 p.m. (all time MST) and Lees-McRae College at 4 p.m. On Sunday, Jan. 30, Carthage takes on Lees-McRae at 1 p.m. and Grand Canyon at 4 p.m.
