The Carthage College men's volleyball team (1-1), ranked ninth in the pre-season American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, evened its season record on Friday, Jan. 14 with a 3-1 win over St. Xavier University (0-1) at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Cougars were 25-19, 19-25, 25-11 and 25-11.

Leading, 12-10, in the first set, Carthage ran off four straight points to take a 16-10 lead, en route to a six-point decision, 25-19. St. Xavier took the lead, 5-4, in set two, opened up a six-point edge, 19-13, and went on to win by six, 25-19. The Red Men broke a 5-5 tie in the third set and opened up a 10-point lead, 20-10, en route to a 14-point victory, 25-11. Carthage broke a 16-16 tie in the fourth-and-final set and never trailed after that, winning by a 25-21 margin.

Randy Hansen (Jr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) led the Red Men with 15 kills, while Tyler Frings (Jr., Hubertus, Wis./Milwaukee-Pius XI) had nine kills with a .333 attack percentage and eight block assists. Matt Yanz (Jr., Bolingbrook, Ill./Naperville-Central) had seven kills and hit. .375 with a block solo and five block assists. Jim Schultz (Fr., Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) also had seven kills with six block solos. Setter John Condon (Jr., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) averaged 7.0 assists per set, while Connor Wexter (Fr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) averaged 4.0 assists per set. Aaron Porter led St. Xavier with 11 kills. The Red Men travel to Romeoville, Ill., on Tuesday, Jan. 18 to play Lewis University (3-0) in a 7 p.m. contest at Neil Carey Arena.
