The Carthage College men's track and field team (36-12 outdoor record) finished third at the Friday-Saturday, May 7-8 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Wheaton College's McCully Stadium in Wheaton, Ill. Augustana College (Ill.) won its 16th league title and second in three years with 262 points, just two points ahead of second-place North Central College at 260. Carthage was third at 145, followed by Wheaton (Ill.) fourth at 61, Millikin University fifth at 30, Illinois Wesleyan University sixth at 26, North Park University seventh at 20 and Elmhurst College eighth with 14 points.

Carthage's Buzzy Brown (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) won the long jump (23-7 ¼) and finished second in the 200-meter dash (22.36). Prentis Wilbourn (Jr., Racine, Wis./Case) took first place in the triple jump (47-11 ¾), as did Josh Brennan (Jr., Geneva, Ill.) in the hammer throw (NCAA-automatic and Carthage-record 191-8). Mike Oratowski (So., Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn-Glenbard South) was second in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.08), as was Brad Fortney (Jr., Antioch, Ill.) in the shot put (52-3 ¼) and Ross Bunchek (Jr., Valparaiso, Ind.) in the hammer throw (186-10). Marshall Stewart (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) was third in the 400-meter dash (49.20), as was Aaron Carr (Fr., Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) in the discus (148-4) and Chas Walton (Sr., Glendale, Wis./Milwaukee-Nicolet) in the decathlon (5,913 points).
