The Carthage College men's track and field team (5-1) opened its outdoor schedule by finishing second at the Saturday, April 3 North Central College “First Chance Invitational” at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in Naperville, Ill. North Central (Ill.) won the nine-team event with 284 points, followed by Carthage second at 130.50, Wheaton College (Ill.) fourth at 87.75, Wisconsin-Stevens Point fourth at 81, Harper College fifth at 57, Benedictine University (Ill.) sixth at 54, Aurora University seventh at 42, North Park University eighth at 10 and the College of DuPage ninth with 5.75 points.
Carthage's Buzzy Brown (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) won the long jump (22-11) and took second in the 200-meter dash (22.36). Mike Oratowski (So., Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn-Glenbard South) finished first in the 100-meter high hurdles (15.58), as did Josh Brennan (Jr., Geneva, Ill.) in the hammer throw (174-6) and Prentis Wilbourne (Jr., Racine, Wis./Case) in the triple jump (45-11 3.4). Ross Bunchek (Jr., Valparaiso, Ind.) was second in the hammer throw (171-06). Marshall Stewart (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) finished third in the 400-meter dash (49.91). The Red Men also collected a win from their 1,600-meter relay team.
