The Carthage College baseball team (0-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked ninth in the March 2 “D3baseball.com” poll, opened its 2010 season on Saturday, March 6 with a 3-1 loss to No. 8 Heidelberg College (3-0) at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Fla.
Starting pitchers Mario Perez (0-1) for Carthage and Heidelberg's Sylvester Nino (1-0) were dueling away when the Student Princes broke through with a run in the sixth inning. With one out, Ricardo Lizcano reached base on a throwing error by Red Men shortstop Chris D'Angelo. Gar Keen was hit by a pitch, and both runners moved up on a double steal. One out later, Lizcano scored on a second throwing error by D'Angelo. Heidelberg made it 2-0 in the seventh on another unearned run. With two outs, Steve Decker singled. Alex Monroe reached on a dropped fly ball to rightfielder Trevor Whately, scoring Monroe all the way from first base.
Carthage scored its lone run in the eighth off reliever Andy Lowe. With one out, Nate Hughes doubled and later scored on a throwing error by Student Prince shortstop Jason Lash. Heidelberg closed out the scoring with a run in the eighth off Red Men relief pitcher Tim Keyes. Lizcano was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Lash. Carthage was limited to five hits, four singles and a double, by Nino and Lowe, with the latter picking up his first save.
Also on Saturday, March 6, the Red Men defeated Ohio Wesleyan University (0-1), 10-6, also at Charlotte High School. Starting pitcher Scott Danly (1-0) picked up the win, with relief help from Nic Jensen. Will Hodges went two-for-four with a solo home run. Matt Soderlund went three-for-five with three RBI, Joey Aiello two-for-four, and Tyler Eickmeyer went two-for-five.
