Firebirds Stung by Big Inning in Loss to North Central (Ill.)

KENOSHA — Carthage jumped in front early but could not recover from a decisive third inning, falling 20-6 to North Central (Ill.) baseball team on Sunday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: North Central (Ill.) 20 - Carthage 6 (7 Innings)
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Augie Schmidt Field
  • Records: North Central (Ill.) 11-8 (4-1 CCIW), Carthage 6-12 (0-5 CCIW)
How it Happened
  • The Firebirds answered quickly after surrendering a two-run home run in the opening frame, as Zander Tubbs led off the bottom half with a solo shot to center to cut the deficit in half.
  • Carthage continued to build momentum in the second inning, capitalizing on a North Central (Ill.) error to plate two runs before Michael Ossenfort added a sacrifice fly to give the Firebirds a 4-2 lead.
  • That advantage was short-lived, however, as North Central (Ill.) erupted for eight runs in the third inning.
  • The Cardinals strung together timely hits, including a two-run single and a two-run home run, while also taking advantage of wild pitches and aggressive baserunning to take control of the game at 10-4.
  • Carthage responded in the bottom of the inning when Caden Meyer launched a two-run home run to left field, trimming the deficit to 10-6.
  • The Firebirds were unable to draw closer the rest of the way, as North Central (Ill.) added three runs in the fourth and continued to extend its lead with multiple-run innings in the fifth and sixth.
