The Carthage College men's volleyball team (19-10, 5-1 Midwest-III Volleyball Conference), tied for 15th place in the March 30 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, lost to Clarke College (22-10), 3-2, on Wednesday, March 31 at the Kehl Center in Dubuque, Iowa. Clarke's winning set scores were 26-30, 30-26, 26-30, 30-27 and 15-13.
The Crusaders' Travis Gabehart led both teams with 30 kills and a .352 attack percentage, while Alex Kelsheimer and Bobby Springer had12 kills each. Carthage's Randy Hanson (So., Oak Lawn, Ill.) had 14 kills and hit. 206 with five blocks (1 solo, 4 assisted). Matt Yanz (So., Bolingbrook, Ill./Naperville-Central) had 13 kills with a .320 attack percentage, and Tyler Frings (So., Hubertus, Wis./Milwaukee-Pius XI) added 12 kills with a .409 attack percentage and nine block assists.
The Clarke contest was the regular-season finale for the Red Men, who play host to the Midwest-III Volleyball Conference Tournament on Friday-Saturday, April 9-10 at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. On Friday, April 9, the College of Mount St. Joseph plays the Milwaukee School of Engineering at 5 p.m., with Carthage taking on Fontbonne University at 7 p.m. On Saturday, April 10, the consolation match gets underway at 11 a.m., with the championship match at 2 p.m.
