Carthage Men's Volleyball Defeats No. 15 NYU and No. 18 Nazareth at Wisconsin Invitational

The Carthage College men's volleyball team (17-7, 3-0 Midwest-III Volleyball Conference), ranked 12th in the March 16 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, helped play host to the Friday-Saturday, March 19-20 Wisconsin Invitational at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. 

On Friday, March 19, No. 15 New York University (3-10) swept the College of Mount St. Joseph (0-15), 3-0, at Tarble Arena, followed by Carthage (16-7) sweeping NYU (3-11), 3-0. NYU's winning set scores over Mount St. Joseph were 30-13, 30-14, 30-13, while the Red Men's winning scores over the Violets were 30-24, 30-26 and 30-19. No. 13 the Milwaukee School of Engineering played host to the other half of the tournament at the Kern Center in Milwaukee. On Friday, March 19, Cardinal Stritch University (18-6) swept No. 18 Nazareth College (12-11), 3-0, followed by Nazareth (13-11) defeating MSOE (11-12), 3-1. Cardinal Stritch's winning set scores over Nazareth were 30-19, 30-20 and 30-19, and Nazareth's winning scores over MSOE were 30-28, 25-30, 30-26 and 32-30.

On Saturday, March 20, Nazareth (14-11) defeated NYU (3-12), 3-1, at Tarble Arena, with Carthage (17-7) then defeating Nazareth (14-12) by a 3-1 margin. Nazareth's winning set scores over NYU were 30-28, 30-21, 20-30 and 30-14, and Carthage's winning scores over Nazareth were 28-30, 32-30, 30-22 and 30-25. Also on March 20 at the Kern Center, Cardinal Stritch (19-6) swept both Mount St. Joseph (0-16) and MSOE (11-13) by 3-0 margins. The Wolves' winning scores over the Lions were 30-9, 30-13 and 30-13, and their winning scores over the Raiders were 30-22, 30-24 and 37-35. In the final contest at the Kern Center, MSOE (12-13) swept New York (3-13), 3-0, with winning scores of 30-23, 30-23 and 30-25.

In the first set over NYU, Carthage took the lead, for good, 12-11, and the Red Men went up by four, 17-13. The Violets came back with four-straight points to force a tie at 17. The Red Men took the next three points to take a 20-17 lead and never trailed after that, en route to a 30-24 win. In set two, Carthage took a 7-6 lead and opened up a six-point margin, 17-11. The lead went seven, 20-13, before the Red Men went on to win by four points, 30-26. In the third set, Carthage broke a 6-6 tie and opened up a five-point lead, 12-7. The margin went to seven, 16-9 and to eight at 19-11 before the Red Men pulled away at the end for an 11-point victory, 30-19. Carthage's Tom O'Connell (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) had 12 kills and hits .333, while Randy Hansen (So., Oak Lawn, Ill.) collected nine kills and hit. 300. Pattrick Dodd topped NYU with eight kills.

In the first set against Nazareth, the Golden Flyers broke a 17-17 tie and then held off the Red Men, who closed to within a point, 29-28, before Nazareth won, 30-28. The second set was tied at 16-16 before Carthage ran off six unanswered points to take a 22-16 lead. The Golden Flyers tied the set at 28-28 and 29-29 before taking a 30-29 lead. The Red Men took the last three points for a 32-30 decision. Carthage took a 12-6 lead in the third set. Nazareth got within two on a couple of occasions, but the Red Men went on to win by eight, 30-22. In the final set, Carthage went ahead, for good, at 9-8 in a close contest. Leading by just one, 26-25, the Red Men ran off the final four points for a 30-25 win. Carthage's Randy Hansen (So., Oak Lawn, Ill.) had a match-high 14 kills. Matt Wallace (Jr., Plainfield Ill./Naperville-Neuqua Valley) had 11 kills and hit. 320. Tom O'Connell (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) and Matt Yanz (So., Bolingbrook, Ill./Naperville-Central) each had 10 kills, with Yanz hitting .273. Hans Schroeder topped the Golden Flyers with 19 kills. Carthage travels to Milwaukee on Wednesday, March 24 to play the Milwaukee School of Engineering (12-13, 2-1 M-III) in a 7 p.m. M-III Conference match at the Kern Center
