The Carthage College baseball team (5-3, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 10th in the March 9 “D3baseball.com” poll, swept a Saturday, March 13 doubleheader from No. 4 Kean University (6-3), 10-2 and 16-4, at North County Regional Park in North Port, Fla. The Kean set concluded Carthage's eight-game spring trip. 

Pitcher Mario Perez (Jr., Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township, 1-1) went the distance in the seven-inning first game and allowed two runs, one earned on seven hits and two walks. The Red Men did most of the damage early off Kean starting pitcher Billy Dumchus (0-1), scoring runs in the first inning, one in the second and two in the third. Tyler Eickmeyer (So., Kenosha, Wis./Somers-Shoreland Lutheran) went three-for-three with two doubles, a triple and three RBI. Joey Aiello (So., Libertyville, Ill.) went two-for-three with an RBI, and Nate Hughes (Sr., Antioch, Ill./Community) went two-for-four with an RBI, as Carthage collected 13 hits.

In the nightcap, the Red Men continued the assault by pounding out 21 hits and scoring four times in the second inning, four times in the third, two in the fourth and five in the fifth to open up a 15-3 lead. Hughes went three-for-four with two RBI, Aiello two-for-four with a home run and three RBI, Eickmeyer three-for-six with a double and an RBI. Drew Roberts (Sr., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) three-for-six with a double and two RBI, Matt Soderlund (Jr., Racine, Wis./Washington Park) two-for-five with two RBI, and Tim Hansen Jr. (Sr., Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) went three-for five. Chris D'Angelo (So., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Pitcher Scott Danly (Sr., Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South, 2-0) was the beneficiary. Danly went the first six innings and allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, while walking five batters. Bryan Kieffer worked the seventh inning, Andy Pucher the eighth and Matt Martinski the ninth.

Carthage travels to Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday-Sunday, March 20-21 for three indoor games at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. On Saturday, March 20, Carthage plays No. 1 the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) in a 9:45 p.m. game, followed by a Sunday, March 21 doubleheader with St. John's University (Minn.), beginning at 2 p.m.
