The Carthage College women's basketball team (4-0, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked ninth in the pre-season “D3hoops.com” poll and ninth in the Nov. 23 Women's Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III poll, defeated a pesky Coe College team (2-1), 62-57, on Saturday, Nov. 27 at Moray Eby Fieldhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Coe was ranked 50th in the pre-season “D3hoops.com” poll.
With Carthage's win over Coe, Lady Reds coach
Tim Bernero passed Diane Mizerka to become Carthage's winningest women's basketball coach. Mizerka went 116-74 from 1968 to 1980. Bernero is now 117-71 in eight seasons.
Carthage took an early, 12-point lead, 19-6, at 9:46, and the Lady Reds led by 11 points at halftime, 28-17. The Kohawks used a 13-2 run at the start of the second half to make it a two-point game, 32-30, at 14:38. Coe tied the game, 43-43, at 8:54 and took a 45-43 lead at 7:49. Carthage took the lead for good, 46-45, at 7:00 on a three-point play by
Dani Ripkey. The Lady Reds went back up by seven, 52-45, at 5:04.
The Lady Reds had the ball and a three-point lead at 60-57 with 21 seconds to go when
Taylor Tondelli turned the ball over. Coe's Sarah Anciaux launched what would have been a game-tying three-pointer. The shot missed and was rebounded by Carthage's
Diana Jacklin. The junior forward promptly scored on a layup at the other end with three seconds on the clock for the final, 62-57 margin.
Carthage shot 52 percent (23-44), while Coe shot just 35 percent (20-57), including just one-of-19 from three-point range. Four Lady Reds scored in double figures.
Diana Jacklin (Jr., Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) had a game-high 15 points on six-of-eight field goals and three-of-four free throws, along with six rebounds.
Cailee Corcoran (So., Oak Lawn, Ill./Chicago-Marist) had 11 points on five-of-nine shooting.
Dani Ripkey (Jr., Deerfield, Ill.) had 10 points and six rebounds, while
Taylor Tondelli (Sr., Downers Grove, Ill./South) came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down five rebounds.
Kayla Waskow led the Kohawks with 18 points on five-of-11 field goals and eight-of-nine free throws. Kayla Lincoln came off the bench to score 10 points for Coe.
On Monday, Nov. 29, the Lady Reds play host to Loras College (2-2) in a 7:30 p.m. game at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
