The Carthage College men's volleyball team (4-4), ranked sixth in the Jan. 26 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, opened play in the Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 30-31 State University of New York Institute of Technology Tournament on Saturday by winning a pair of matches at the SUNY Tech Campus Center Gymnasium.
Carthage swept the City College of New York (0-3) and Lancaster Bible College (1-5) by identical 3-0 scores. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Beavers were 30-11, 30-10 and 30-15, while their winning scores over the Chargers were 30-11, 30-20 and 30-11.
Carthage's Randy Hansen (So., Oak Lawn Ill.) collected a match-high 11 kills and hit a school-record .917 (11 kills, 0 errors, 12 attempts) against the City College of New York. He had 17 kills and hit .625 in the win over Lancaster Bible, while Eric Ball (Sr., Naperville, Ill./North) and Tom O'Connell (Jr., Chicago, Ill./.Brother Rice) had seven kills each. The 11-team tournament concludes on Sunday, Jan. 31.
