The Carthage College men's volleyball team (2-4), ranked sixth in the Jan. 26 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, was swept by NCAA Division I Lewis University (4-0), 3-0, on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill. The Flyers, ranked 14th in the Jan. 25 AVCA NCAA Divisions I-II poll, defeated the Red Men, 30-22, 30-21 and 30-23.
The Flyers opened up a 17-9 lead in the first set. The lead went to 10 points, 28-18 en route to an eight-point decision, 30-22. In the second set, Lewis broke open a 19-17 contest with an 11-4 finish to win by nine points, 30-21. In the final set, the Flyers took a 14-9 lead and never led by less than five points en route to a seven-point victory, 30-23. Nathan Klaas topped Lewis with nine kills, while Aaron Flick totaled seven kills with a .400 attack percentage.
Carthage's Randy Hansen (So., Oak Lawn Ill.) and Tom O'Connell (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) had seven kills each. On Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 30-31 the Red Men journey to Utica, N.Y., to play in the 11-team State University of New York Institute of Technology Tournament at the SUNY Tech Campus Center Gymnasium. On Saturday, Jan. 30, Carthage plays the City College of New York (0-2) at 10 a.m., EST and Lancaster Bible College (1-4) at Noon, EST.
