The Carthage College men's volleyball team (2-3), ranked eighth in the Jan. 19 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, upset NCAA Division I Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (2-3), 3-2, on Saturday night, Jan. 23 at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Red Men's winning set scores over the Mastodons were 22-30, 30-25, 31-29, 21-30 and 17-15. The win marked Carthage's first-ever decision over an NCAA Division I opponent.

In the fifth and final set, the two teams were tied at 8-8, 13-13, 14-14 and 15-15 before the Red Men won the final two points to secure to the 3-2 win.  Carthage's Randy Hansen (So., Oak Lawn Ill.) had 17 kills and hit .387, while Tim Walker (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University High School) had 11 kills with a .474 attack percentage and five blocks. Tom O'Connell (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) also collected 11 kills. Darryl Shank topped the Mastodons with 20 kills and a .366 attack percentage, while Ivan Matos had 17 kills and hit .294 with six block assists. All seven Carthage starters played the enire match.  The Red Men travel to Romeoville, Ill., on Tuesday, Jan. 26 to play NCAA Division I Lewis University (3-0) in 7 p.m. match at Neil Carey Arena.   The Flyers were ranked 14th in the Jan. 25 AVCA NCAA Divisions I-II poll.
