The Carthage College men's volleyball team (1-3), ranked eighth in the Jan. 19 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, traveled to Indiana on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 22-23 for a pair of matches against NCAA Division I competition. On Friday, Jan. 22, the Red Men were swept by Ball State University (4-1), 3-0, at Worthen Arena in Muncie, Ind. The Cardinals' winning set scores over the Red Men were 30-22, 30-22 and 30-24. Ball State was ranked 17th in the Jan. 18 AVCA NCAA Divisions I-II poll. On Saturday, Jan. 23, Carthage faces Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (2-2) in a 7 p.m., EST match at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
In Carthage's loss to Ball State, the Cardinals led from the start in the first set and opened up a 17-10 lead. The Red Men got as close as five points, 23-18, before the Cardinals went on to win by 10, 30-20. In the second set, Carthage had an 11-9 lead before Ball State took over for good, 12-11. The Cardinals opened up an eight-point spread, 28-20, and went on to win by eight, 30-22. The Red Men enjoyed an early 5-1 lead in the third set before the Cardinals took the lead, to stay, at 10-9. Carthage got as close at four points, 27-23, before Ball State won the set, 30-24. Jamion Hartley collected 11 kills for Ball State and hit .474, while Lee Meyer also had 11 kills and hit .200. Tom O'Connell (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) topped the Red Men with 11 kills, while Randy Hansen (So., Oak Lawn, Ill.) had nine kills.
