Joe Hensel begins his sixth year as an assistant football coach in 2019 after serving as a graduate assistant coach at Kent State University in 2013. 

Working primarily with the offensive line, Hensel has helped build an offense that ranked third in both College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin scoring and rushing in 2017.  Hensel has seen five of his position players named All-CCIW over the years, including three in 2017.

Prior to Kent State, Hensel was a graduate assistant at the University of Cincinnati in 2012, a part-time assistant at Ferris State University in both 2010 and 2011 and an assistant coach at East High School in Lapeer, Mich., in both 2008 and 2009.  A native of North Branch, Mich., Hensel was an offensive lineman at Hope College, where he graduated in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in specialized teaching.  Joe married his wife, Laura, in the summer of 2016.
