Women's Volleyball Suffers Sweep at Edgewood Triangular

MADISON, Wis. — The Carthage women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Tuesday at the Edgewood Triangular, falling to host Edgewood, 3-1 (25-22, 15-25, 26-24, 25-17), before dropping a 3-0 decision (25-20, 25-23, 25-21) to No. 1 Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.


VS EDGEWOOD
Set 1: Carthage and Edgewood battled throughout the opening set, with the Firebirds trailing 20-18 before rallying to make it a 22-21 contest. Edgewood scored three of the final four points, however, to take the opening set, 25-22.

Set 2: The Firebirds responded with a strong second set. Carthage built an early advantage and used a 5-0 run to take a 15-7 lead. The Firebirds continued to pull away, eventually taking the set, 25-15, to even the match.

Set 3: Carthage fought through a back-and-forth third set that featured 10 ties and three lead changes. The Firebirds pulled even at 20-20 behind a service ace from Ava Dettwiler, then remained within striking distance late. Edgewood reached set point at 24-22, but Carthage answered with two straight points to tie the set before Edgewood ultimately prevailed, 26-24.

Set 4: Edgewood took control in the fourth set, building an early advantage before Carthage battled to stay within reach. The Firebirds trailed 15-12 before Edgewood extended its lead and closed out the match with a 25-17 victory.

VS WIS-OSHKOSH
Set 1: Carthage stayed within striking distance throughout the opening set, trailing 16-10 before battling back to make it 23-18. Kristina Manojlovic followed with consecutive kills to cut the deficit to 24-20, but Oshkosh closed out the set, 25-20.

Set 2: The Firebirds continued to battle in the second set, overcoming an early Oshkosh advantage to take a 13-15 lead. The Titans responded, but Carthage remained within one at 23-22 following a Mina Reichert service ace. Oshkosh scored the final two points to take the set, 25-23.

Set 3: Carthage held an early advantage in the third set before Oshkosh rallied to tie the score. The Firebirds led 19-18 and later 21-20, with Manojlovic providing kills during the late push. Oshkosh answered with five of the final seven points, however, to secure a 25-21 set victory and complete the sweep.




Against Edgewood, the Firebirds recorded 33 kills, 12 service aces, 56 digs and 13 total blocks. Manojlovic led Carthage with seven kills and 15 digs, while Emma Crow added nine kills and six block assists. Della Walsh contributed 13 assists and 10 digs, while Sofia Campos recorded four total blocks.

Carthage then faced No. 1 Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which entered the match with an 8-0 record. The Firebirds totaled 37 kills, 48 digs and nine block assists against the Titans. Manojlovic paced Carthage with 14 kills while hitting .313, adding 11 digs. Dettwiler finished with nine kills, 17 assists, six digs and two service aces, while Macy Wente contributed seven kills and three block assists. Reichert added 10 digs.



"Tough battle against two very well coached and experienced teams," said Head Coach Leanne Ulmer. "I thought we did a lot of good things. After the first against Edgewood we got our block going and served tough. We were up in set three near the end and let it slip away. Against Oshkosh we struggled to slow their Outside Hitters but we played them tough every set.  Tina [Manojlovic], Ava [Dettwiler] and Mina [Reichert] had some standout plays on the night.  We have been through the grind and have played 12 matches already against some great competition.  Now we are off until we play Wheaton next Tuesday. Time to rest and work on the areas we need to improve. Our young players are getting some great experience."
