Firebirds Sweep Weekend at St. Norbert Chick-Fil-A Invitational

DE PERE, Wis. – Carthage volleyball earned a pair of victories Saturday to close out the St. Norbert Chick-Fil-A Invitational, defeating Westminster (Mo.) (25-20, 18-25, 25-21, 24-26, 15-12) and Ripon (25-17, 25-13, 25-19).

Against Westminster, Carthage overcame a back-and-forth five-set battle against a team that received votes in the latest AVCA Top 25 rankings. The Firebirds held a 25-20 edge in the opening set, Westminster answered with a 25-18 win in the second, and Carthage regained the lead with a 25-21 third-set victory. Westminster forced a deciding set with a 26-24 fourth-set win before Carthage finished the match with a 15-12 fifth-set victory.

Against Ripon, Carthage completed the day with a sweep, hitting .263 while limiting the Red Hawks to a .129 hitting percentage. The Firebirds recorded 43 kills, 10 service aces and three blocks in the three-set victory.

At the conclusion of the Invitational, Ava Dettwiler and Kristina Manojlovic were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Dettwiler also being named the Most Outstanding Athlete.

VS WESTMINSTER
Set 1: Carthage used a 5-0 run to turn a 7-5 deficit into a 10-5 lead, with kills from Macy Wente and Dettwiler and a service ace from Dettwiler. Westminster battled back, but the Firebirds maintained control late. Grace Wenthold delivered consecutive service aces to push Carthage ahead 23-19 before Hailey Wierzgac finished the set with a kill for a 25-20 victory.

Set 2: Westminster took control early, opening a 5-2 lead and extending the advantage to 13-5. Carthage trimmed the deficit to 17-10 behind kills from Manojlovic and Wente, but Westminster answered and closed the set 25-18.

Set 3: Carthage opened the third set with a 3-0 run and later built an 8-4 advantage. Westminster pulled even at 9-9, but the Firebirds responded with a 5-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. Carthage continued to hold the advantage late, using consecutive points from Manojlovic and Dettwiler to reach 24-21 before an attack error by Westminster gave the Firebirds the 25-21 win.

Set 4: Carthage jumped ahead 6-2 behind three consecutive service points from Wenthold, including two aces. Westminster rallied to tie the set at 8-8, and the teams traded points throughout the remainder of the frame. Carthage led 24-23, but Westminster scored the final three points to take the set 26-24 and force a fifth set.

Set 5: Carthage and Westminster traded points early before the Firebirds opened a 9-6 lead. Westminster pulled within one at 12-11, but Carthage answered with kills from Manojlovic and Wente to take a 14-12 lead. Manojlovic and Wente connected again for the match-clinching point, giving Carthage a 15-12 victory.

VS RIPON
Set 1: Ripon opened with a 4-1 lead, but Carthage quickly answered and moved in front 6-5. The Firebirds later used a 5-0 run to build a 15-10 advantage, with service pressure from Elise Webster and Dettwiler helping Carthage pull away. Carthage extended the lead to 21-11 before finishing the set 25-17.

Set 2: Carthage took control early, turning a 3-3 tie into a 15-3 advantage with a 12-0 run. Della Walsh served during the run, recording an ace while Sydney Horacek added multiple kills and Carthage's block defense contributed to the surge. Ripon cut into the deficit, but the Firebirds closed the set 25-13.

Set 3: Ripon held an early 7-6 lead before Carthage answered with four straight points. The Red Hawks later tied the set at 13-13, but Carthage responded with five consecutive points, including kills from Manojlovic and Kate Badrov. The Firebirds continued to hold the advantage and finished off the sweep, 25-19.



Carthage (8-3) hit .280 against Westminster and .263 against Ripon, finishing the two matches with 110 kills, 23 service aces and 12 blocks.

Manojlovic led Carthage with 48 kills across the two matches, including 21 against Westminster and nine against Ripon. Dettwiler added 32 kills while recording 74 assists between the two matches.



"Nice weekend for the Birds!" exclaimed Head Coach Leanne Ulmer. "We overcame some adversity this morning to rally to a five-set win over Westminster. Tina [Manojlovic], Ava [Dettwiler] and Macy [Wente] all played a big part in the victory!!  Ava McTeague and Grace [Wenthold] did a nice job at libero.  In the afternoon match Wente, Kate [Badrov] and Ava [Dettwiler] stepped up to complete the sweep.  Now after a day off we are back at practice to get ready for two tough opponents on Tuesday!"
